The Peoria Police Department is sponsoring a Citizens Police Academy for 9 months,
September 26, 2007 through May 21, 2008.
This session will concentrate on
the relationships between the Peoria Police Department and the people. We
hope the attendee will have a better understanding of the
inner workings of your police department.
Sessions were from
6:00 PM to 8:30 PM, Wednesday nights with
two
subjects being presented at each session.
Please apply as soon as possible as the class is
limited to 40 students. Please call Community Services Unit at
309-494-8246, if you have any questions.
The goal of the Academy is to give you some helpful insight concerning your Police Department and police work in general. This program will also give you an opportunity to voice your concerns and to ask questions. This two-way communication between officers and the public will certainly be an effective and successful way to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Citizen Police Academy and an excellent way to “BUILD A PARTNERSHIP” between the community and the Police Department.
CITIZEN ACADEMY OVERVIEW
We encourage interested people to click
on the application link below, print it out the application, complete it,
and mail it to the address indicated in a timely manner. Since only 40 students
will be chosen, you will want to get your name on the list to be contacted
regarding an upcoming academy. Forty participants will be chosen and notified of
the next scheduled academy. We ask that prior participants not apply again.
A background check will be done on all applicants. The Peoria Police Department reserves the right to deny entry to the Academy based on the findings of the background check.
The Peoria Police Department generally has two citizen’s academies each year, one in the spring and another in the fall. Classes will meet one day per month for nine (9) months. Classes will be about 2 1/2 hours long, from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Classes will be held in the Peoria Police Department's Community Training room.
During the 2 1/2 hours there will be two to three informational sessions presented. Each session will be varying lengths, with a 10 minute break between them. There will be fifteen (15) informational sessions and a building tour. You will get an introduction to a variety of subjects and receive a lot of information. Your first week begins with a build tour and tour of the Emergency Communications Center. Your final week will be Graduation.
During the Academy you will hear from Officers and/or Supervisors who work the various divisions in the Police Department: Patrol, Investigations, K-9, Strategic Planning, and Crime Lab are but a sampling of whom you will meet and subjects presented. You may hear from the Departments Victim Advocate and/or learn CPR and Hazardous Materials Awareness from professionals in our community. A representative from the City Legal Staff and State's Attorney's Office will give presentations on the law and process after a criminal complaint is filed.
We will schedule off site visits, such as the Peoria County Jail and Emergency Communications Center. You may also ride along with an officer on his/ her tour of duty. One of our goals is to keep the academy new and interesting to our students. Off site visits are one way of achieving this goal.
After completing this program,
we hope you take your knowledge out into the community and share it with
your friends and associates. We hope you will be able to educate others
about the Peoria Police Department and foster a better understanding of
our duties and capabilities.
